Current Learning Units
Our fifth unit in our reading program is Weather. We will read fiction, poetry, and informational texts about clouds, rain, snow, sleet and different types of storms. We will do part of our reading in a Big Book, and part in our First Reader. Students will begin to read the stories themselves in the First Reader and we continue to discuss meaning, make connections, and ask questions. We will work on spelling patterns for long
vowel sounds, including magic e at the end of words and vowel-teams. We read daily for about 10 minutes in our leveled reading folders. Students meet with me in reading groups to practice a variety of strategies for reading. We'll continue to practice and learn more and trick words.
Our fifth math unit is about place value, number stories, basic math facts, and comparing numbers. We'll work with base-10 blocks to practice place value and to practice adding two-digit numbers. We'll compare numbers and learn about the greater than and less than signs. We'll practice easy addition facts like the +0, +1, and doubles addition facts. We'll also learn about pre-algebra routine called "What's My Rule?"
Our science unit is on properties and states of matter. We will spend a few weeks practicing describing and sorting objects by texture, color, shape, size, and weight. We will then learn about the states of matter (solids, liquids, and gases) and how solids and liquids change state.
