2009-2010
Welcome to the Grafton Elementary School Music webpage!
Regular music classes are held on Thursdays, and private lessons in Piano and Guitar are available after school hours.
Some special happenings this year:
Our annual school-wide trip to the Opera Theatre of Weston will take place on Tuesday, January 12, 2010. This year's professional fully-staged and costumed production is The Little Prince. Special thanks to the PTG for financially supporting this annual event!
Our annual World's Fair concert will be on December 10th at 6:30. Students will be presenting music from various countries at the performance. Geographical places represented this year are Mexico (Kindergarten), China (Grade 1), Kenya (Grade 2), Poland (Grade 3), Vermont (Grade 4/5), and Egypt (Grade 5/6).
CURRICULUM
Music teachers in the district are currently working on a district music curriculum in which the state and national standards are aligned.
To summarize, music activities include the following:
1. Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.
3. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
4. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.
5. Reading and notating music.
6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music.
7. Evaluating music and music performances.
8. Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts.
9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture.
There are some fun and interesting websites which support the music curriculum. Some of you may enjoy visiting these along with your music learning in class.
Music Learning Sites
If you visit the Vermont MIDI website you can listen to a compositon by Grafton's former student, Henry Lawrence, whose piece was selected to be performed by members of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra last year in their Opus 16 concert.
