Keewaydin
Where are we: $3392                     Goal: $3040
Happenings:
  • Mr. Clifford is holding an apple bake sale on the porch of the Grafton Town Hall Sunday October 11th from 10AM - 3PM.  6th grade families are baking the goods, all food will be available for donation.  The bake sale was a hit!  The weather was beautiful, the Inn was busy, but most importantly people baked like crazy.  We counted a record ammount of $1082, putting us a third of the way toward our Keewaydin Goal.

  • Sue and Mark donated a Turkey, Students are selling raffle tickets: $1.00 each.  The drawing will take place the day of the Thanksgiving Feast, Monday, Nov 23.  The winner will be contacted by phone. The Turkey raffle made $269, thank you Sue, Mark, and Keltsey!  12/18/09

  • Jen Coburn is organizing a potluck dinner open to the community.  Food provided by 6th grade families.  It will take place at the Grafton Chapel Saturday Nov 7th at 5 - 6 PM.  Donations will be accepted for the dinner.  The dinner raised a whopping $910, thank you to all who contributed! 12/18/09

  • Tara Taylor has organized a candy bar fundraiser, see her for details. $304 have been deposited from candy bar sales as of 11/2/09.
  • There has been a mscellaneous deposit of $412, I'm not sure if those are candy bar sales, donations, or a mix of the two.  12/18/09
  • Several pivate donations have been made thanks to the letter in the Gabber currently totaling $415.

Energy
Light, heat, and electrical are the three types of energy we'll be focusing on as we explore what energy is, how it behaves, where it comes from, and why we need it. Students will be reading nonfiction, conducting experiments and demonstrations, and creating a bank of questions about what they have discovered as we learn all about energy.

Open Court Reading
Open Court is a comprehension program that Grafton uses to help teach reading.  Sixth graders will be working out of a theme based anthology while they work on comprehension skills, vocabulary, and fluency.  Some of the Themes we'll be working on are: Perseverance, Ecology, and Ancient Civilizations.
Book Projects
This year students in 4 - 6 will be working on book projects.  An assignment will be due every 3 weeks.  You can pull up the assignments and due dates as well as some of the criteria on our book project page.

Mexico
For our cultural study this year we'll be studying Mexico.  Students will be responsible for creating a project as outlined by a checklist.  You can get this document in the additional links section of this site.  Also, we'll be compiling resources, both books and web sites.  To see our web site compilation, visit porta portal and sign into the guest field as scliffor.
Young Writers Project
We'll be doing some work with the The Young Writers Project, a web initiative inthe state of VT designed to get reluctant students writing.  Through it's affiliation with the Burlington Freepress, students can be chosen to be published in the paper.  Check out the site here: http://grafton.ywpschools.net
We recomend that families download and use Firefox rather than internet explorer for the young writers project.  Firefox is free and in some ways a better browser than internet explorer.  You can get it here.
